Two explosive batsmen of world cricket retired on the same day. One said goodbye to day cricket, while the other retired from international cricket altogether. Both the legendary players have said regarding their retirement. On Monday morning June 2 fans got a shocking news. The news is that Glenn Maxwell has retired from ODI cricket. Yes, 35-year-old Maxwell has bid farewell to his illustrious 13-year ODI career. This player who made his ODI debut on 25 August 2012, scored more than 3900 runs in 142 ODI matches. During this period he scored four centuries and many turnaround innings. Be it the 2015 World Cup victory or the miraculous campaign of 2023. Maxwell’s name is recorded in both of these. Maxwell played his last ODI match against India in the semi-finals of the Champions Trophy 2025. Where he was out after scoring just seven runs. Now the question is why did Maxwell retire from ODIs? So he himself has answered this. Maxwell wrote on his Instagram: After a lot of thought I have decided to retire from One Day International cricket. Wearing the Australian jersey was the biggest honour of my life. Friends, he clearly said that now he does not want to put any burden on his body. In particular, his leg injury is no longer able to withstand the physical demands of ODIs. And his target now is T20 World Cup 2026. Maxwell was heard saying in an interview that I do not want to play selfishly just for the sake of playing. If I feel that I am not able to contribute fully to the team then it is better to step aside.
On the other hand, South African wicketkeeper-batsman Heinrich Klaasen has also retired from his entire international career. His decision has also proved to be an emotional blow for the fans. Klaasen has played four Tests, seven ODIs and 58 T20Is for South Africa. In his career, he rescued the team many times in difficult situations. Especially his explosive innings in the final of T20 World Cup 204 is still fresh. Klaasen also wrote a long note on his retirement on Instagram. He wrote, this is a very sad day for me. This was a very difficult decision to take but it is the right one for me and my family’s future. Klaasen further writes that this was a dream I had seen since childhood. Playing for this team has been the biggest honour of my life.
